A few weeks ago I sat listening to Vernon Brewer (Founder of World Help) as he described the plight of persecuted Christians around the world. Most recently of our Christian brothers and sisters in Iraq and Syria. As He spoke, Vernon said many challenging things – but this one statement really hit me. “Hope Changes Everything.”
And Vernon’s right – because when you are in crisis and struggling to see past the next day, Hope can really change everything. Your outlook on life and your outlook on the future changes. Hope is what allows you to take a step into another day. It’s what helps you keep breathing.
I can not even begin to imagine the horrors that many of our Christian brothers and sisters are facing in many different parts of the world. I may think I have known persecution for my faith, but those small grievances pale in light of the heart wrenching hurt and pain visited on those in truly persecuted regions.
As Vernon described some of the horrors these precious people are facing, I wondered what kind of mental, emotional and spiritual trauma would follow for them. While the human spirit may be resilient, it also can be bruised, battered and left for dead.
I know how the dark days and nights of depression, fear and anxiety can come…. and I worry for these men, women and children in the days ahead.
Physically there is not much I can do, but I know that one thing we can all do…we can all hit our knees and pray. To boldly step to the throne of Grace and ask for God’s protection and mercy to be upon those suffering right now.
It’s easy to go on with our lives, to forget. May I challenge you to ask God to give you a heart to pray? To ask God to give you a picture of these precious people – that they would not remain nameless and faceless to us.
Pray for the workers that are risking their own lives to serve. My own cousin and her husband are there now, serving our persecuted brothers and sisters. They are risking their own lives in what seems like a hopeless, never ending situation….in order to bring hope.
Is God calling you to do more than just pray? Maybe He is calling you to support those who are in the heart of the battle to save these precious people. You can visit World Help’s site HERE – the ministry of Vernon Brewer and donate.
Also, take some time to read this article published in Christianity Today: Winter’s coming: Mark Burnett, Roma Downey Launch $25 Million Plan To Help Christians in Iraq and Syria. – The race is on to provide shelter, food and other neccesities before winter closes in on these precious people living out of tents and abandon buildings.
The plight and the need is great….How is God calling you to be a part?
Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.” “Selah” But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the LORD I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. “Selah” I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.
1 Corinthians 15:54-58
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
