As I sit and write this our oldest daughter is winging her way to her missions trip destination for the summer. But before she left I asked her if she would give us a bit of perspective from a teen girls heart.
So we took some time to sit down and chat about what it means to be a teenage girl in today’s world. The following are the questions I posed to her…and her answers. What is one of the toughest challenges of being a teenager today?
“I think one of the toughest challenges of being a teenager today is the pressure from the culture and media of today. Today the world tells us so much. How to act, what to wear, who to be….We are expected to do all sorts of stuff and many times be somebody we are not…And if we don’t wear the latest fashions or listen to the “cool” music we are considered not cool. It’s really not about being an individual….it is really about conforming to what the world wants.”How do you handle this challenge?
“I don’t worry about whether I’m wearing the latest fashion or not. What matters is that I not be who the world wants me to be, but who God wants me to be.”
For music I choose to listen to Christian music. I made this decision because I know that whatever you surround yourself with or feed into your mind…will affect how you act. I look to God’s word that tells me that…..
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
“I want “God things” to flow from my heart not “worldly things.”
Roman 12:2 says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”What helps you be “Fearless” when it comes to going after God and what you feel he has called you to do?
“I just know that God has a plan for me and that if something turns out wrong God has a reason for it. That no matter what He will help me through it….So I don’t need to worry about anything because God knows what He is doing. I can trust Him with who he has created me to be…I can trust Him with my heart.”
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11What advice do you have for other teen girls who desire to be “Fearless” for God?
“Just to remember that no matter what, God loves you and will protect you and be there for you. Even if it doesn’t feel like He is…He never moves away from us. God knows what He is doing and has an awesome plan for you life. You just have decide if you are going to go for it or not.”
“I want to be a girl who goes after God…that’s the way to really live life!”
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
It is most certainly not easy being a teenager these days. So much has changed even from when I was in middle and high school. The challenges are different, the expectations are different, the things that bombard our girls hearts are different…
Have you asked your daughter recently what some of her biggest challenges are? What are the places she feels bombarded in?
It’s not that we can always fix those things for her but we can pray…we can show we are listening and that we care.
This week I challenge you to talk to your daughter. Pray and ask the Lord to give you an open door to ask your daughter what her challenges are as a teenager? Ask her how you can pray for her and support her as she navigates these years. Let her know she has an advocate in you. That when life feels like it is too much….that she has a safe place to run too….to find shelter and safety in.
This week let’s get a daughter’s perspective…Her world just might surprise you.
